Nero d'Avola through Centuries:


”News of a wine called "calavrisi" appeared around 16th century, a wine cultivated in the countryside of Catania, produced by round grapes. Origins are clear for Calavrisi, then Italianate in Calabria.
Local language evolution goes from a local way of saying into a common word. Avola is a small town in the middle of Syracuse area, close to Noto and Pachino.
Grapes coming from Avola, which today are known as “Nero d'Avola”, it was said that they were descended from Avola as follows:

Calabrese
Reasonably Nero d'Avola, original grape from Avola is called “calabrese” for simple assonance, typical of linguistic evolution. Nero d'Avola gets its origin certainly from from Sicily, in the sunny land of Syracuse, is a strong, healthy wine, able to withstand non-irrigated land, and used for decades as a grape to reinforce other wines. Rediscovered in the last 10 years, Nero d'Avola is the variety of the best Sicilian red.
Vine from aging, Nero d'Avola has a  typical sensory  that makes it easily recognizable. Its bunch is not very large, with medium-small slightly pointed grapes, with red with hints of violets fruits, very impressive, pronounced aroma of red fruit (plum, blackberry) and unmouth-drining tannins. Low yield, Nero d'Avola 'rise to great red wines in which the scents of red fruit, even after many years, are the most important component and feature, along with typically sweet tannins.
Although cultivated along all Sicily, its maximum expression comes out from vineyards  just between Noto and Pachino.

Gulfi Nero d’Avola:

GULFI elected Nero d'Avola grape in his prime. GULFI actually produces 6 major labels of Nero d'Avola, four of which are cru with award-winning production in the vineyards of Pachino (Nerobufaleffj, Neromaccarj, Nerobaronj, Nerosanloré), to which must be added the Nerojbleo and Rossojbleo,  produced with grapes from Chiaramonte Gulfi (RG)vineyards. We also find a 50% Nero d'Avola also in Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, another great award-winning GULFI wine, where Nero d’Avola joins Frappato, grape native from Victoria
